Biography
Upon receiving his J.D. from Brooklyn Law School in 1998, Ezra C. Levy joined the Legal Aid Society’s Criminal Defense Division’s Brooklyn Office. Almost immediately, Ezra demonstrated an unparalleled ability to litigate complex issues in a clear-cut manner, enabling both judges and laypersons to understand what was involved. At the same time, Ezra made sure to learn from a myriad of excellent experienced attorneys who appeared in the Brooklyn courts. Realizing what worked and what didn’t work, Ezra honed his craft so that he quickly became recognized by all as a trial attorney to be reckoned with. Ezra’s expert cross-examination and summation skills, as well as his non-textbook trial style has left lasting impressions on all who watched his performances. More importantly, it resonated with the jurors who acquitted Ezra’s clients.
Ezra’s trial skills were not lost upon his supervisors. Ezra was quickly felony-certified, and almost just as quickly, homicide-certified. Indeed, Ezra may be the youngest attorney in the history of the Legal Aid Society to be handpicked to serve as lead defense counsel of a client charged with Murder in the First Degree. During Ezra’s tenure at Legal Aid, Ezra secured full acquittals for clients improperly charged with: Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Robbery, Burglary, Rape, Assault, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, and many other charges. Many of Ezra’s victorious clients had serious criminal records, some facing potential life sentences, but with Ezra’s help, these innocent men and women are free today. For nearly a decade, Ezra’s lecture on the grand jury and felony motion practice was an integral part of the felony-certification program in the Brooklyn office of the Legal Aid Society’s Criminal Defense Division. Ezra has also lectured senior attorneys on the law and ethics of discovery as well as answering hundreds of questions from other lawyers at to fact-specific applications of the law of the grand jury or trial issues in their cases.
Ezra’s legal skills has saved many clients from unwarranted or overcharged indictments. On more than one occasion, among Ezra’s victorious motions were those for clients who improperly charged with Attempted Murder in the First Degree, a crime that carries a potential life sentence. Ezra’s brilliant legal mind and written advocacy skills proved integral in reducing the charges to where these clients were no longer facing a life sentence.
More than his trial or legal skills, Ezra is proudest of the reputation for integrity he has with judges and senior prosecutors who he has dealt with. When Ezra says something to a judge or prosecutor, they listen, because they know that while Ezra is a hard-as-nails litigator, he is also an honest Member of the Bar. This reputation for honesty, has served Ezra’s clients over the years in: having the appropriate cases dismissed on his word alone; having prosecutors consent to clients’ release based on Ezra’s representation of facts, and in having prosecutors and/or judges consenting to reduced jail sentences or even alternative to incarceration programs based on Ezra’s application when appropriate.
