Biography
Gabriel is a highly skilled and experienced trials and appeals lawyer who has handled hundreds of criminal defense cases in federal court. He is a graduate of Columbia Law School and former Assistant Federal Public Defender with the offices for both the Western and Northern Districts of Texas. Prior to founding his own practice and time in public service, Gabriel worked as a tax associate at Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP.
Throughout his career, Gabriel has appeared as attorney of record in federal matters that range from white collar crimes to drug crimes, including: healthcare fraud; complex mail, wire, tax and bankruptcy fraud; racketeer influence in corrupt organizations; drug conspiracies; drug possession; theft of government funds, and misdemeanor violations. Favorable results include dismissals, pretrial diversions, and probationary dispositions. Gabriel has tried cases to jury verdict in federal courts as lead and co-counsel. Those cases involved fact patterns ranging from bank fraud to the prosecution of an investment scheme under the mail and wire fraud statutes. He has also argued at the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and filed several briefs there. In 2015, Gabriel obtained a not guilty verdict while serving as co-counsel on a case that exposed his client to a 15-year statutory minimum sentence.
A native Spanish speaker and frequent traveler, Gabriel is comfortable communicating with colleagues and clients from a range of cultural backgrounds. In 2016, the Instituto de Estudios Comparados en Ciencias Penales y Sociales (INECIP) invited Gabriel to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he helped train trial lawyers in the country’s newly adopted adversarial mode of trial proceedings.
In 2017, Gabriel received an appointment as an adjunct professor at the University of North Texas School of Law. He continues to teach there and works with students enrolled in the Practice Foundations courses, which focus on interviewing, counseling, negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
Since 2018, Gabriel has served as a member of the Board of Directors for the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL). NACDL is an organization headquartered in Washington, D.C. Its stated mission is to serve as a leader alongside diverse coalitions in identifying and reforming flaws and inequities in the criminal legal system, redressing systemic racism, and ensuring that its members and others in the criminal defense bar are fully equipped to serve all accused persons at the highest level.
Gabriel has been recognized by the Dallas Bar Association for his distinguished service. In 2020, he received the Jo Anna Moreland Outstanding Committee Award for his outstanding work executing CLE programs. That same year, Gabriel was elected a Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation in recognition of outstanding professional service and notable contributions to the system of justice and the people of Texas.
