Biography
I have been licensed to practice law in North Carolina since 1981.
I graduated from Duke University with High Honors in 1977 and from
the University of North Carolina School of Law in 1981 with honors.
I was a member of the editorial staff of the North Carolina Law Review and was
inducted to the Order of the Coif--an honor allowed to only the top 10% of law school
graduates.
I practiced law in Alexander County North Carolina until 1986 when I ran and was elected as Judge of the District Court for the 22nd Judicial District of North Carolina.
I served as a District Court Judge until January of 2000 when I was appointed to the Superior Court bench by the Governor of the State of North Carolina.
I served as a Superior Court Judge for the 6th Judicial Division of North Carolina until I retired from this position in 2008. The 6th Division includes Cabarrus, Anson, Iredell, Richmond, Stanly, Union, Alexander, Davie, Davidson and Rowan Counties.
I am certified by the N.C. Dispute Resolution Commission to mediate family financial and civil superior court cases and served on the Commission for six years while I was a sitting judge. I also served as chair of the N.C. Rural Courts Commission and as chair of the education committee for the N.C. Association of District Court Judges.
I am the elected State Bar Councilor for Judicial District 22A.
I have a son with autism and have worked closely with various autism groups to train law enforcement, first responders and court officials about recognizing and responding appropriately to individuals on the Autism spectrum. I worked with the N.C. Legislature to reform laws for admission of testimony for individuals with disabilities and to mandate training for law enforcement.
I served on the Board of Directors for Disability Rights of North Carolina for six years and now serve on the Board of Directors of the Autism Research Institute. I was chair of the "Safe and Sound" program for the Autism Society of America.
I now have a private practice with offices in Statesville, N.C.(Iredell County) and Taylorsville, N.C. (Alexander County). I am experienced and capable of litigating matters in any trial court in the State of North Carolina. This includes family matters in District Court, criminal matters in District and Superior Court and personal injury, wrongful death actions in any trial court.
