Biography
For the past 16 years as both a military and DoD civilian attorney, Matt served as an advocate and advisor to the highest-ranking officials across the Air Force and the Department of Defense. Matt currently serves as an attorney-advisor for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Born and raised in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Matt attended Louisiana State University (LSU) where he received a degree in Mathematics and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant through the Air Force ROTC program. After returning to Tuscaloosa to obtain his law degree from the University of Alabama School of Law, Matt entered active duty in the United States Air Force in 2003.
There, Matt served as a prosecutor, defense counsel, and government appellate counsel, as well as the assistant executive officer to The Judge Advocate General of the Air Force. After separating from active duty in 2014, Matt was an attorney-advisor to the Judicial Proceedings Panel before becoming a Special Assistant to the Undersecretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness.
In addition to his present position with FEMA, Matt continues to serve in the USAF Reserve, including a recent three-year extended tour as a government appellate counsel.
Matt and his wife Kerrie live on the Gulf Coast with their two youngest children, their basset hound (Chief) and their cat (Lando). Their oldest child lives with her husband in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In his downtime, Matt can be likely be found near sand, water (or both), or watching LSU play whatever sport is currently in season.
Matt is admitted to practice in Alabama, the Supreme Court of the United States, the Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, and the Army, Air Force, and Navy-Marine Courts of Criminal Appeals.
