Biography
First, I am a pretty big geek.
I’m a life-long reader of comic books who also loves video games, boardgames, and tabletop role-playing games. When it comes to comics I pull from a wide variety, from independent sources as well as the big publishers, and am currently a regular reader of about five or six ongoing series. Videogames and tabletop role-playing games are also how I spend a decent amount of my now-limited free time; I pick up at least one new video game every few months, and am currently engaged in two weekly tabletop roleplaying games.
Several years ago I actually created a small role-playing game myself and have sold over 150 copies using as my print-on-demand service. I’ve got a few new ideas in the works, as well.
Second, I’m lucky enough that my ability to geek out about stuff extends to my love of learning and -of special note here – the law.
I graduated from Campbell University’s Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law, and while my work there had a strong focus on trial advocacy (criminal and civil) I also had a strong interest in First Amendment and Intellectual Property Law.
Before law school I taught high school history and geography for four years at Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory in Hollywood, Florida. I started as a member of the faculty there with a Bachelor’s Degree in History from the University of Mississippi, and no educational background whatsoever, a week before classes started.
It was probably the best thing that could have happened to me straight out of college; I learned how to organize, how to teach, how to get familiar with new information very quickly, and how to talk to large groups of people even when I was incredibly nervous. I was made the head of the freshman history syllabus that first semester, keeping that position for the next four years even when I was given more sophomore classes to teach, and also acted as Faculty Moderator of the school’s Sci-Fi Club.
veryIt’s for all of these reasons that I started Geek Law and want to help the people who make the sort of things I love, people with passions I understand, create new things and protect their works.
