Biography
Michael Thomas Cooper joined the McLeod Law Group after serving three years with the Charleston County Public Defender’s Office. As an Assistant Public Defender, Michael represented more than 750 individuals charged with serious crimes and misdemeanors. Michael fought to protect the rights of his clients and to ensure their chance for a fair trial. During his time with the Public Defender’s Office, Michael successfully negotiated favorable plea deals and won jury trials for indigent clients with a variety of charges, including homicides, robberies, serious drug offenses, property-related offenses, and financial crimes.
Michael Thomas Cooper grew up in Charleston where he attended the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and Bishop England High School. Michael earned his B.A. in English from the College of Charleston and after graduating he attended the University Of South Carolina School Of Law. In 2011, Michael graduated with Cum Laude honors and as a member of the Order of the Wig and Robe.
During law school, Michael worked for a plaintiff’s litigation firm in Charleston where he assisted with Class Action and Multi-District Litigation claims against national corporations and manufacturers. Michael also participated in the Federal Litigation Clinic at the USC School of Law where he represented an individual whose civil rights were violated by a State institution.
Michael is a member of the Charleston County Bar Association and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
