Biography
McDermott IP Law is an intellectual property law firm, specializing in patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, licensing and IP related litigation, providing you and your business the sophisticated IP advice you would expect from a large IP practice with personal service and reasonable rates. My goal is simple – to provide clients a place to turn for cost effective, timely, and successful resolution of their intellectual property needs. I partner with you and your employees, learn your business, and focus on your IP needs so that you can continue to focus on growing and running your business.
Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, Rick McDermott founded McDermott IP Law in October 2018 after practicing IP law at Alston & Bird LLP and its predecessor firm Bell Seltzer Park & Gibson PA for over 24 years. Rick has represented clients both in the Carolinas and across the country, ranging from large multi-national corporations, to start-ups and spin-offs, including both for profit and non-profit entities.
Rick is not only passionate about his work for his clients - he also is committed to his community. In 2014, Charlotte Magazine honored Rick as Charlottean of the Year for his volunteer work in the community. In addition to assisting his clients with their IP issues, Rick is passionate about giving back to the community and assisting non-profits with their legal issues. Rick currently serves as chair of the board of trustees of the Greater Carolinas Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, as a member of the board and executive committee of the Community Building Initiative, and as a member of the Alexis de Tocqueville Cabinet of the United Way of the Central Carolinas. Rick has served on the boards of Equality North Carolina, The Relatives, Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy, Marquette University Alumni Association, the Dean’s Advisory Council for the Marquette University College of Engineering, the Charlotte Children’s Choir, and the Charlotte City Club.
