Biography
My practice focuses on obtaining patents with commercially meaningful claim scope, IP management and strategy, and license agreements relating to medical devices, drug delivery materials, imaging and diagnostic agents, personal care products, and chemical technologies.
I regularly write and prosecute patent applications, invalidity and non-infringement opinion letters, and negotiate and draft patent license agreements. I have also filed Appeal Briefs and presented oral arguments before the Federal Circuit and the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences (now PTAB).
I help clients understand the options along with the potential risks and rewards relating to protecting their intellectual property. Whether a start-up company, a tech transfer office at a university, or a multi-national corporation, I seek to cultivate a personal connection with every client I serve.
I am a registered patent attorney, a member of the Georgia Bar, American Bar Association, American Intellectual Property Law Association, and the American Chemical Society. I am actively involved in the Intellectual Property (IP) Law Section of the Georgia Bar, and currently serve as the Secretary. Previously, I served as the chair of the Community Outreach Committee, Patent Committee, the Philanthropy/ Outreach Committee, and the Special Events Committee, and organized a variety of CLE programs, including the popular “IP Boot Camp”. In 2014, I served on the Advisory Committee that created Georgia's Pro Bono Patent Program (Georgia PATENTS). I am also actively involved in the Intellectual Property Law Section of the American Bar Association, and serve as the current chair of the Patent Legislation Committee.
I was selected by my peers for inclusion in the Best Lawyers® in Georgia for Intellectual Property Law in 2016 and 2017.
I earned a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, with high honors, from the Georgia Institute of Technology. I earned my J.D., cum laude, from the University of Georgia School of Law, where I served as articles editor for the Journal of Intellectual Property Law and authored “The Importance of Correct Inventorship,” 7 J. Intell. Prop. L. 191 (1999). During law school, I also worked as a scientific advisor in a law firm.
