The Thomas M. Cooley Law School at Western Michigan University is a private, non-profit, tax-exempt, 501(c),(3) law school that teaches students the skills, knowledge, and ethics necessary to succeed in law practice and be productive members of society. In 1972, Hon. Thomas E. Brennan. The school was named after Hon. Thomas McIntyre Cooley was one of the most important jurists in the 19th century. The Law School, which began as a small school for lawyers in a nearby area and then grew to become a larger school that attracts students from all over the globe, is now the seventh-largest law school in the country. The Law School was established in 1972 by a group consisting of lawyers and judges, led by the then-Chief Justice for the Michigan Supreme Court.
