"UMKC Law is surrounded by a large alumni community who are always willing to help current students. The law school is located between Missouri and Kansas courts and businesses. The University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law was established in 1895 as the Kansas City School of Law. It is a public school that began in Kansas City. With the help of members of the bar and the bench, William Borland and Edward Ellison founded the law school. Borland was the school's first president. Ellison succeeded him as dean from 1938 until the School of Law was merged with the University of Kansas City. The school took its current name after it became affiliated with the University of Missouri in 1963. In 1974, the law school moved to UMKC’s main campus.
