Seton Hall University School of Law

Seton Hall University was founded by Bishop James Roosevelt Bayley in 1856. The University was named after his aunt, Sister Elizabeth Ann Seton. She was the first American-born saint. More than 10,000 students are enrolled in Seton Hall's eight colleges and schools on the University's South Orange campus. The School of Law in Newark is also home to them. A law school was planned for Seton Hall University as early as 1937. The school was not established due to the demands of the war years or the post-war influx of returning GIs. It was only established in 1950. The New Jersey Supreme Court adopted rules requiring that candidates for bar admission have law degrees from accredited law schools by the American Bar Association (ABA) at the time. John Marshall Law School, Jersey City, New Jersey, was therefore forced to close. Seton Hall was given its library and many other assets by John Marshall's administration in June 1950. Seton Hall was obliged to manage the records of John Marshall's graduate students in return.
