What is Maritime Law?
Maritime law is the collection of domestic and international legal rules about navigation, international waters and ocean fisheries. They supervise how naval and private sailors and passengers behave and oversee ships, commercial activities, navigation, shipping and goods.
Maritime law or admiralty law, also deals with land-related areas connected to maritime activities such as marinas and docks.
What Do Maritime Lawyers Do?
Maritime lawyers handle the same types of civil lawsuits and defense of criminal cases that typical lawyers do. You do not need to serve in the navy to work with a maritime lawyer. Navigable waterways, canals, the seas and oceans, cargo, commercial vessels, pleasure and recreational craft, barges, offshore oil and gas rigs and similar areas are all handled by maritime law.

Most of the time, a maritime attorney must deal with rules from statutes and the process for handling cases. These include vessel collisions, civil wrongs (called torts) committed at sea or of an industrial nature, including workman’s compensation under the Longshore and Harbor Worker’s Compensation Act.
Maritime attorneys further work on contract matters, cases linked to environment and energy, claims of personal injury, suits for negligence by employers and issues related to unseaworthy vessels in transit to their destination.
Should I Hire a Maritime Attorney?
When you face issues involving maritime law, the best step is to hire an attorney with experience in maritime cases. It is not unusual for maritime cases to handle ships under the laws of different countries, as with cruises and so these attorneys must understand international maritime laws.
