Boston College Law School ranks among the top law schools in the country. Our tradition of teaching lawyers through theory and practice has helped us to be successful and prepare leaders who can tackle the most difficult moral and ethical issues in society. Boston College Law School was founded in 1929. It opened its doors in the 11-story Lawyer's Building, located on Beacon Street in Boston. It was founded with 54 students from a student pool of almost 700 applicants. The school quickly grew despite the Great Depression. The school was accredited by the American Bar Association in 1932, three years after it was founded. It joins Harvard, Yale, and Boston University as the only New England law schools to achieve this distinction. The school had 350 students by the fall of 1937. It included women by 1940. BC Law, which was gaining a reputation for its excellence and increasing enrollment, moved to Chestnut Hills in 1954. It occupied the newly built St. Thomas More Hall at the BC campus. The University acquired the Newton College of the Sacred Heart, which was established in the 1970s. This is where the Law School finally found its permanent home. Boston College Law School is dedicated to providing the best quality graduate and professional education and recognizes its obligations as a national school of law to both the academic and the professional worlds. Our mission is to stimulate new insights through scholarship and research, to teach knowledge and analytical skills by providing instruction of the highest quality, and to critically examine the role of legal institutions and law. We also want to helptheir students develop the skills and qualities that they need to be successful practitioners. To this end, they look for ways to integrate theory and practice, astheyll as opportunities to instill moral and ethical values intheir students that will allow them to apply the law in a rational and just manner.
